Why movement is medicine

Yesterday, I returned to my boxing class for the first time this year and had a great conversation with my coach, Frans Morela. Interestingly, he shared that most of his clients are coming back not for weight loss or physical strength, but for the mental health benefits they gain from small-group boxing and HIIT sessions. This insight aligns perfectly with the well-documented mental health benefits of exercise.

Exercise is more than just a tool for physical fitness – it’s a powerful way to elevate mental well-being. Here are seven key ways exercise supports your mental health:

1. Elevates mood

Exercise releases endorphins, the “feel-good” chemicals, which help combat depression and anxiety. It also improves sleep quality, which is essential for regulating mood.

2. Boosts self-esteem

Completing challenging workouts fosters a sense of accomplishment and strengthens your belief in yourself, enhancing self-confidence.

3. Enhances social connection

Physical activity, especially in group settings, helps build social connections, reducing feelings of isolation and improving overall mental resilience.

4. Reduces stress

Exercise mimics the stress response, training your body and mind to recover quickly, which builds resilience to daily challenges.

5. Provides an emotional outlet

Whether it’s boxing, yoga, or weightlifting, exercise allows you to channel emotions constructively, leaving you feeling lighter and more grounded.

6. Improves your outlook

Regular exercise encourages good posture and a positive attitude, influencing how you perceive life and how others perceive you.

7. Introduces new experiences

Exploring new activities like hiking or yoga prevents mental stagnation and adds excitement and purpose to your life.

The bottom line

Exercise is truly medicine for the mind. Whether it’s through boxing, running, or yoga, moving your body can transform not just your fitness but also your mental clarity and emotional balance. Start small, find activities you enjoy, and watch how it uplifts your mind and spirit.

Keep moving, keep growing, and keep evolving.
