Shining a light on mental health

While opening our doors is a joyful milestone, we must also remember that October is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to reflect on how we show up for ourselves and for others.

Since the pandemic, suicide rates in South Africa have risen by 18 percent, a sobering reminder of the pressures so many continue to face silently. Turning away doesn’t help. Talking about it, taking small steps, and finding your tribe can.

That’s why this month we’re shining a light on practical ways to support mental health, including live interviews on our social media platforms and special events we have planned.

Facebook Live with Steven Slotow

Theme: Mental Health, Grit and Growth
Date and Time: Friday, 10 October at 12 PM

We’re excited to host Steven Slotow, resilience coach, business coach, and entrepreneur, for a candid discussion on staying strong in today’s world. With lived grit and honest insights, Steven empowers entrepreneurs and leaders to embrace discomfort, build resilience, shift mindset, and take ownership, turning adversity into growth and purposeful action.

This session will explore:

– Resilience as a daily practice in life and work
– The unique challenges of speaking openly about mental health
– Practical strategies for bouncing back stronger after setbacks

Mindfullness in action: Tips from Mark Joseph

Taking a few mindful minutes each day can:

– Reduce stress and calm the nervous system
– Improve focus and clarity
– Build resilience in daily life

Try this practice for yourself and see how a few breaths can shift your whole day.

Mental health tips for October

Drawn from evidence-based guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO), the South African Society of Psychiatrists, and peer-reviewed research:

1. Move with intention: 20–30 minutes of daily exercise (running, walking, or stretching) reduces stress and boosts mood.
2. Talk about it: Sharing what you’re going through with someone you trust helps lift the weight of silence.
3. Practice mindfulness: Short, regular sessions of breathing or grounding can reset your nervous system.
4. Prioritise sleep: Rest is not optional, it is essential for both mental and physical resilience.
5. Find your tribe: Connection protects against isolation. Being part of a group, class, or community can be life-saving.

“ There is no health without mental health. – World Health Organization

Whether through mindfulness, movement, or community, let’s keep showing up for ourselves and each other.

Hope to see you at the Open Day!
